COVID-19 booster and seasonal flu vaccination programmes

This year, the covid-19 booster and seasonal flu vaccination programmes are being delivered together by NHS Lanarkshire. Where possible, people who are eligible for both vaccinations will receive one appointment – so they don’t need to attend two appointments within a short period of time.

To allow GP practices to continue to provide vital services to patients, we are not involved in delivering these programmes. Please do not contact us about the covid booster or flu vaccinations as we will not be able to help.

As with the initial covid-19 vaccination programme, we are asking people to be patient as they will be contacted when it is their turn for either or both vaccines.

People who are eligible will be invited to attend an appointment in one of NHS Lanarkshire's seven vaccination centres, located across Lanarkshire. These are:
 Airdrie Town Hall, Airdrie
 Ballerup Hall, East Kilbride
 Banqueting Hall, South Lanarkshire Council Headquarters, Hamilton
 Braidfute Retail Park, Lanark (with satellite clinics at Abington, Biggar and Stonehouse)
 Fernhill Community Centre, Rutherglen
 Link Community Centre, Cumbernauld
 Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, Motherwell

Vaccination status records

All enquiries about vaccination status records should go to the national covid-19 status helpline on 0808 196 8565. It can take up to 14 days to rectify issues on vaccination records,
so you should check you records as early as possible, before going on holiday or to an event.

More information is available at

A number of people have received one or both covid-19 vaccinations outwith Scotland and are now enquiring as to how to get these added to their Scottish record. The Scottish
Government is working on a solution to this and information will be published once it has been confirmed.

We are facing an increased demand for our services at a time of reduced capacity due to staff absence, restructuring and infection control measures for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It will take us a bit longer than usual to respond to your concern through askmyGP.

askmyGP will be available from 7.30am until 4pm Monday to Thursday, 7.30am - 1pm on Friday

Lots goes on behind the scenes to maintain your medical records and plan your care. Remember, it can take 7 days for us to receive and process your blood and urine test results. Sometimes it can take a bit longer depending on what tests are requested. Results of investigations are returned to the Clinician who asked for them. If your specialist at the hospital has requested tests, X-Rays or Scans the results will go back to them. Best thing to do is contact your Consultant's secretary for more information.

We are developing our Team to try to ensure that you see the right person at the right time in the right place to help with your concerns.

We appreciate your patience and understand that it can be frustrating if you feel that we are unable to meet your expectations.

Our staff are subjected to increasing amounts of verbal abuse and aggression. This is very upsetting. We are here to help and only ask that you help us in return by being kind and understanding of the pressures we face.

We are pleased and excited to announce that from Monday 3rd May 2021 Burnbrae Medical Practice will merge with Drs Dear & Begg (Newmains) to continue to provide you with a wide range of general medical services provided by a multidisciplinary team of experienced healthcare professionals across both sites – Shotts Health Centre and Newmains Health Centre.

You can continue to attend the Health Centre closest to you. Telephone contact numbers remain the same. You can still contact us via askmyGP.

Our aim is to support you to live well, providing the right care at the right time in the right place with the right person.

Our Practice during COVID-19

We are open and fully operational during the pandemic.

Unfortunately, due to an underlying health condition which comes under the Shielding category, Dr Arnott is required to work from home whilst we are in Level 4 the current Government restrictions.

We have a wide range of clinicians present in the Practice and Dr Arnott has access to all our clinical systems to be able to give advice and treatment if necessary. She is available directly through the AskmyGP link for ‘live chat’.

All prescriptions, unless otherwise stated, are passed to your chosen local pharmacy to be dispensed and collected. The Pharmacy in Shotts Health Centre remains closed. As always, please allow a minimum of 48 hours before collecting any medication, unless we tell you otherwise. Deliveries are still being carried out by the chemist. Any enquires regarding delivery or collection of medication should be directed to the chemist.

MED3s (‘Fit Notes’, medical certificates)

You can no longer collect your medical certificate from the Practice as we are trying to reduce footfall to support social distancing and infection control. When you request a medical certificate, we will generally email this to you. If you prefer it can be posted 2nd class the next day. Please note that MED3s cannot be forward dated.

Sample kits and other items

If you require to collect any sample kits requested during a consultation, or any other information, you can still do this in person. You do have the option for us to post this out to you. Please let us know if you wish us to do that.

If you require to make a payment for any item, you can pay by card over the phone. This is our preferred method of payment. If you cannot do this, you can still come into the Practice and exchange cash.

Current Guidance

Please remember to wear a face covering when you enter the building, unless you are exempt. If you do not have a face covering, one can be provided for you. Again, this is to keep you and us safe. Please also remember to clean your hands with the hand sanitiser available. You can still attend medical appointments in person if advised to do so. If you do not need to come in to the Practice – don’t. If you can communicate with us via telephone, please do so. We also have our ‘live chat’ askmyGP facility for any and all questions.

Recently, many members of our team have been subject to insults, aggression, threats and abuse. This is very upsetting for the whole team. It will not be tolerated and behaving in this way affects our Professional Relationship with you. As a result, we may have to remove you from our Practice list. We understanding this is a difficult time for everyone, but being subject to abuse of any kind is not part of our job.

We would like to thank everyone for their continued support and patience during this time. Stay safe and stay positive. We are here to help whenever you need us!

From Wednesday 8th July 2020, NHS Lanarkshire has advised all patients and visitors to Shotts and Newmains Health Centre MUST wear a face covering when on the premises. If you do not have access to a face covering, there will be disposable masks available at the Community Reception desk at the entrance. We thank you for your co-operation.

SERVICE UPDATE (26th April 2021)

We continue to offer a full range of services BUT - it is still NOT business as usual.

  • Telephone and digital consultations via askmyGP are preferred where safe and appropriate.
  • Urgent cancer referrals and non-cancer urgent care continues.

A one-way system is operating in the Practice and the waiting areas have been re-organised to comply with social distancing rules.

Demand and footfall is increasing for minor illness - e.g. hay fever, rashes, headaches, muscular back pain, haemorrhoids - consider visiting a Pharmacy first as their Minor Ailments service has been extended to everyone.

From Monday 3rd May 2021, we will only accept prescription requests by telephone for those who are self-isolating. You should contact the Pharmacy directly to arrange delivery of prescriptions items. The Repeat Prescription box is now in the main corridor of Shotts Health Centre opposite the toilet facilities. There is also one in Newmains Health Centre.

We appreciate your continued support and understanding in these uncertain times.

GP appointments - please help

Enter a brief description of your concerns via askmyGP on the home page or telephone Reception and leave some details. Your GP will get back to you by 'live chat' or telephone to see how best to help. They will organise a face to face appointment if required. This saves phoning at 8am for an appointment, being stuck in a queue or struggling to be seen at a time that suits best. It's much quicker than waiting for a call back.

Withheld Numbers

The Practice telephone numbers - are displayed as 01698 759000 by our current service provider - please be available and prepared to answer the call if you expect your GP or Nurse to phone you back.

Long Term Condition Review

If you have a long term condition(s), you will be invited to attend for an annual health check/'MOT' in the month of your birthday. Our Nurse will first gather some information and do some tests and tasks relevant to your condition(s). We will then collate the results and send you a care plan with your information and a brief description of what the numbers mean. You will then have time to consider the information, think about what is most important to you and what you would like to discuss prior to your next appointment with your Practice Nurse or GP. You can then discuss a plan to help you live well with your long-term condition(s) and make the most of the treatment and support we can offer.
